Connect: The Music

What makes a community drum circle different from a drum circle with youth? At a community drum circle there are often shills, adults and drummers with rhythmic expertise that can help hold a groove while the other players connect to the rhythm. Music teachers are often alone and sometimes have very few students with musical expertise. If you are one of these teachers, use the following multi modal approach to help students connect, before they create: Circle, Language/Voice, Instrument, Movement, Body Percussion, Space (C.L.I.M.B.S).

This session will cover best practices for:

  • Using the circle
  • Using language in a drum circle
  • Using instruments in a drum circle
  • Using movement in a drum circle
  • Using body percussion in a drum circle
  • Using space in a drum circle
