Improv: Imitate Then Innovate — choice table

Choice Description Level
Copy Half-group sculpt; the half that stops finds a rhythm to copy L1/2: find one person to copy. L3: find a rhythm to copy, then add a complementary pattern.
Complement (Change Notes) Same rhythm, different notes L1/2/3: choose different notes/textures/body percussion (limit 2–3 to avoid chaos).
Complement (Add/Remove) Add or remove notes while keeping the structure L1: take/add one. L2: take/add a few. L3: play the first or second half of a 4/8 beat pattern.

4.4 Interactions

Most residencies run one of these two programs alongside the standard grade levels — filled in with the same Section / Activity / What to Do or Say / Supporting Video format.

Interactions

Adapted structure for groups needing extra support. The five core activities repeat each visit; the finale week (below) rotates one new activity per day.

Section Activity What to Do / Say Supporting Video
Ritual Opening Hello Song: “Hello, hello to (student name)!” Wait until everyone is in the room unless the teacher confirms someone will be late.
Rudiment Body Percussion — Steady Beat Play it on the lap, with a clap, with a stomp. Pick a body part to play on (chest, head, hands). Level 3 — Body Percussion Warm Up
Rudiment Activity 1: Exploring Rumbles (fine motor) “Can I get a (two/three/four finger rumble)” — other rumbles: knock, side, chop, finger wag, wiggle, gentle, wave. Level 1 — Rumble Warm Ups
Rudiment Activity 2: Steady Beat (gross motor) “Let’s play a steady beat, we’ll do it all together” — move between steady beat and “group solos” 2–3 times. Other steady beats: wave, train, bass & clap, swing, robot.
Drum Circle Activity 3: Improv “Make Up Your Own Way” Teachers follow you with “ti ti ta – ta ta,” students make up their own way or copy you. Mirror students’ ideas around the circle, always returning to “make up your own way.” Halfway through, offer mallets.
Game Activity 4: Vocal Leadership or Song Students do the countdown with you to stop; say “GO!” or “1, 2 ready GO!” if they can. Language-device users can join quietly. Some will say “Bass, Bass, Bass” & “Tone, Tone, Tone.”
Drum Circle Activity 5: Dance Party You play drums with the teachers; whoever wants to dance, dances. Level 3 Finale — Teachers Lead and Dance Party
Ritual Closing Goodbye Song: “Goodbye, goodbye to (student name)!”

Rotation of Activities

Section Activity What to Do / Say Supporting Video
Monday: Solos Every student gets one turn with the mallets to play a solo. Teachers help keep non-soloing students off the drums. Everyone claps when the student is done.
Tuesday: Boomwhackers Put drums in the middle, give everyone two boomwhackers. Explore steady beats, stops and starts, make up your own, mimic students.
Wednesday: Shakers Put drums in the middle, give everyone one shaker. Movement sequence: “Shake them up high! Shake them down low! Shake them to the side! Shake them too and fro!” Then “one, two, make up your own.”
Thursday: Lead From the Middle Demonstrate volume up, volume down, accent notes (jumping). Let students try from the middle, helping as needed.
Friday: Rhythm Massage Use the frame drums to gently tap a rhythm on students’ backs.
